Each winter, thousands of gray
whales begin their long remarkable journey of 7000 miles from
the feeding grounds of Alaska to breed, calve and nurture
their newborns in the warm waters of the sheltered bays and
lagoons in the Baja California Peninsula, probably the most
unspoiled, exciting and less traveled part of Mexico. One of these lagoons is
Magdalena Bay
in Lopez Mateos, a vast wilderness of
sand dunes, mangrove channels and protected waters, one of the
best places along Baja's Pacific coast to see these friendly
mammals. The arrival of the whales, around the beginning of
January gives us the opportunity to launch our Whale
Watching Tours.
Although the gray whales have been
scientifically studied for many years, not enough is known
about their habits making whale watching an exciting way to
observe these magnificent mammals in their natural habitat.
"Friendly encounters" often occur with curious whales actually
approaching our boats up close to arm's length. These
encounters are not easily explained, but certainly will not be
forgotten by those fortunate enough to experience them. Fly to
La Paz or Los Cabos (see
below), both located in the
Sea of Cortes. We will meet you at the airport and take you to
your hotel. Next day the journey of your lifetime will begin. |

|
The Tour: Early breakfast and then driving along the
Baja Peninsula for about 120 miles. Admire the spectacular
mountain range, the gorgeous desert flowers and the largest
agricultural area of Southern Baja California before arriving
to Magdalena Bay. Once in Lopez Mateos, a 22 to 24 ft.
fiberglass panga boat with life-jackets will take
you for two hours where you will enjoy close ups and possible
encounters with this magnificent and gentle giant mammals.
Admire the seagulls, pelicans, split tails and other marine
birds nesting along the canals where sea lions are also
abundant. Luckily the local shark fishermen will be at work by
the sand dunes. After landing, lunch from the menu will be
provided in a local restaurant.
|
If due to weather conditions “THE TOUR” is not carried on
during the stay of the customer, full value for “THE TOUR”
portion will be reimbursed. Nevertheless, if weather is not
suitable and the customer, in spite of this, insists in taking
the tour, no refunds will be made regardless of the time spent
on the vehicles, on board the boat and/or the presence of
whales. It is also understood that between January 1 and March
15 the presence of whales has been traditionally good, but we
can not rule their presence neither the government regulations
according to special conditions (if any) that may arise in
this particular season. Therefore, and in lieu of the above, we
decline and assume no responsibility under these
circumstances.
Departures every day from January 1 to March 15.
